Denver Center Theatre Company 2009-10 Season Poster Series
Cactus, Denver, Colorado, 2009
Description
The Denver Center Theatre Company is a top-tier, Tony Award–winning theater company, known for their thought-provoking and compelling plays. To promote its 2009–2010 season, we created a series of posters as bold and energetic as the plays themselves. We had the challenge of presenting each play individually while also branding the entire season as a collection of curated shows.
We intended each poster to spark curiosity about its featured play by designing it to hint at the play’s story line twice. We did this by pairing a visual metaphor on one side with a thought-provoking statement within a statement on the other side. This two-sided approach enabled us to create a back-and-forth interplay between the headlines and visuals, and additionally allowed for creativity in how the posters could be displayed around town.
In an effort to create a well-defined and consistent visual presence for the theater company, we kept the color palettes simple and bold, and the illustration style as minimal as possible. By combining simple iconography and juxtapositions, we were able to communicate messages that were straightforward, complex and open-ended, all at the same time.
