Edward Gordon Craig

Base, New York, New York, 2009

Description

Actor, director and writer Edward Gordon Craig published texts, designed sets and wardrobes, and made revolutionary changes to the field of set design. An exhibition at La Casa Encendida in 2009 presented his legacy through drawings and sketches, stage conceptualizations, pictures, radio interviews and magazines. To properly represent Gordon Craig’s vast universe, we designed a book that presents all of these various facets and relationships with people like Isadora Duncan, Oscar Wilde and Stanislavski. We used two opposite typographies—Akzidenz-Grotesk and Newzald—to differentiate Edward Gordon Craig’s essays from contemporary texts, and gave each type of content its own layout.

Juror Notes

Chockfull of odd, inspired juxtapositions: gold color, broken asymmetrically by a die-cut revealing a fluorescent green underneath; a strong grid that constantly surprises the viewer. All the choices are as refined as they are unexpected.
