Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures exhibition
The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2010
Description
Project brief: To advertise an exhibition that exists only of moving images for which it was impossible to clear any rights was a major challenge. It was also a blessing in disguise as we ultimately asked visitors and users to upload their own screen tests to this microsite in the style of Warhol’s iconic works and to view others’ submissions.
Approach: The concept is nothing new but seems timely given the rise of Chatroulette, FaceTime and other video technologies of the past year or two. In fact, technically speaking, it’s almost antique at this point. As our lives have become increasingly distracted and the internet has become bloated with more input and content, there is something both calming and eerily disturbing about a silent person staring back at you.
Effectiveness: We recorded over 57,000 page views during the exhibition and over 670 individual submissions.
Juror Notes
Interactive homage that is a true embodiment of the artist. Completely engaging in its simplicity. Voyeuristic. Brilliant solution to the huge challenge of advertising the exhibit with no license to Warhol’s work.
Arresting. Simply and beautifully executed.
