The Egg Code book

Alfred A. Knopf Publishers, New York, New York, 2002

Description

Mike Heppner’s manuscript presented a variety of design problems—mostly several kinds of texts that needed to be visually differentiated to the reader. I felt this book should have a united package, and decided to utilize Evan Gaffney's cover design for the display. Picking up the typographic treatment of the jacket, I selected a basic text font (Electra) that was compatible and used it as a display font. Then I chose alternate text fonts for the various types of texts that seemed to suggest the content of that text by association, e.g., a typewriter font for student papers or letters. I took a series of letters and numbers that appeared in the text and repeated them as dim positive and negative icons and ran a string of computer zeros and ones across spreads to communicate a futuristic and enigmatic look.
