AmphetaZINE is an HIV-prevention booklet produced for Seattle gay and bisexual men who inject “crystal” methamphetamine. Almost half of this population is HIV positive. Most know that injecting drugs can lead to serious health problems, however new HIV infections in this population are frequently the result of sexual risk. Crystal enhances libido and decreases concern about sexual safety. Modern Dog was contacted in 1999 because the zines were not being picked up or read by the target population. Our solution was simple: to use humor to diffuse the harshness of the subject matter. The zine format utilizes a “home grown” feel; it appeals where more traditional health pamphlets would fail. Articles are based on principles of harm reduction, health promotion and withheld judgment. Poetry, articles, original art work and story ideas are contributed by members of the target audience.
