America’s Conflicts
The New York Times, New York, New York, 2003
Description
Our design problem was to create a large, explanatory figure that would put into a wider context the casualties sustained in Iraq. The design approach remains essentially the same with all informational graphics at the Times: Be clear and be compelling. Design the data so that its patterns emerge and not the hand of the designer. Both graphics went into the newspaper.
Juror Notes
The color-coding is a bit confusing because colors are a little too close in value. Despite this, it presents information clearly and concisely . A bit overly ambitious, but interesting and informative.
