John Cale Concert Poster
Eye Noise, Orlando, Florida, 1997
Description
These concert posters do not serve as the primary advertising medium. Rather, they are intended to reinforce awareness of the upcoming performance and create a memorable image for fans of the artist. Screen printing allows for a larger poster when producing a limited quantity for a low budget. We also opted for two-color screen printing on a linen stock, which enabled the printer to hold detail well.
This piece is meant to work on different levels. Although there are a number of elements, they are united into a single, simple design that works best on the street. The eccentric typography is representative of Cale’s reported idiosyncracies. The symbolism would be clear to his fans— his then most recent recording is entitled Walking on Locusts, and the heraldic symbols of Great Britain and the Prince of Wales refers to Cale’s Welsh nationality.
