Kronos Quartet “Howl USA”
Frank Olinsky, Brooklyn, New York, 1996
Description
I have designed packages for Kronos Quartet for about ten years and they’re always a challenge. Each time I try to come up with an appropriate visual counterpart for the music. “Howl USA” is a series of pieces connected thematically to the post–World War II political climate in America. The title work features a composition with Allen Ginsberg reading his famous poem. I felt strongly that this package should be black and white, reflecting the stark visual vibe of newsreels, newspapers, and surveillance cameras. I wanted it to echo the late ’40s and ’50s but have a contemporary look.
