Without Blood
Alfred A. Knopf Publishers, New York, New York, 2003
Description
The two main sections of this novel differ radically in effect. In the opening chapter, a violent incident is depicted; in the second, a love scene. In order to give a sense of both, I chose an illustration of a blood-red bed. Thanks to Hugo Guinness for providing the beautiful drawing.
Juror Notes
“A breath of fresh air in that the simple, almost crude use of illustration over photography better expresses the novel.” Archie Ferguson
“How lovely. The simple, quirky illustrations, in conjunction with the type design, add up to a strong image—without hitting you over the head.” Isabel Warren-Lynch
