Do You Want to Play?
Dutton Children’s Books, New York, New York, 1998
Description
Bob Kolar’s wonderfully quirky book features two friends and a large cast of supporting characters. Written as an ongoing dialogue, the text required that each character have its own typographic voice, distinctive enough to guide the reader through the packed sideshow of visual and verbal asides. The typeface became an integral part of each composition, with placement and scale critical in complementing the art. Since the art is so densely textured and detailed, one typeface was used for the main text to avoid cacophony. The idiosyncratic shapes and variety provided by Gill Sans engage with the art playfully, echoing the subject of the book.
