Fabrizio Giannini. Live without dead time
Sidi Vanetti, Locarno, Switzerland, 2009
Description
Given that this is a particular object printed in only a few hundred copies, it is not intended for the general public but for collectors and those interested in the work of Fabrizio Giannini. The catalogue takes its cue from the Pop aspect of Giannini’s work. A part of this catalogue, in fact, was overprinted on paper used for the advertising of products made by Migros, a Swiss chain of supermarkets. Migros is also one of the sponsors of the exhibition.
The entire book is printed on one side of four sheets sized 100 by 70 cm. Twenty-four pages, including the jacket, were silk-screen printed (to obtain a covering overprint). The other 24 pages—for greater precision in the reproduction of the works—were printed in offset: 12 in CMYK and 12 in black and silver. The book’s format is 21.5 by 23.5 cm. As an object, it is not too pretentious and having been printed in 24 months on a 100 by 70 cm sheet, it has not produced any waste. The book was finally bound using the Japanese technique given that it was printed on 80 gsm paper.
Both the artist and the author of the critical text—who was also the curator of the exhibition—were actively involved before, during and after the elaborate production process. On seeing the project, the artist was extremely enthusiastic as it coincided with his personal modus operandi.
Juror Notes
Part of the book is overprinted on advertisements. Very effective.
