Forgotten War

de.MO, Millbrook, New York, 2005

Description

This book was approached with the simple idea of creating a photographic journal of five VII photographers that had traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to document the work of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care in nearly 70 countries.

The budget for the book was small. de-Mo decided to bind the book without a traditional cover. FORGOTTEN WAR is simply sandwiched between two sheets of corrugated cardboard, held together by a rubber band.

Juror Notes

Social Relevance Award: Modestly designed, modestly produced, Forgotten War understates the art of the book, but the statement it makes speaks loudly about the fate of a people caught in a maelstrom of violence, greed and apathy that isn’t talked about no seen, and yet the developed world continues to benefit from the natural resources of this mineral-rich continent. It doesn’t need words to the story.
