Private
Helen Mills, New York, New York, 1970
Description
A recruit’s private memories of World War II in a series of word pictures comprise a universal picture of all recruits and of all wars.
Designer’s Comments: The pictures, actual snapshots taken by the author during the war, were a problem from a legal standpoint. Even after 400 percent enlargement, people were still recognizable. The solution, softening the photographs, resulted in also adding to the mood of the book.
