Rage Against the Machine “Evil Empire”

Rage Against the Machine “Evil Empire

Sony Music Entertainment, New York, New York, 1996

Description

Here, Rage Against the Machine uses music as the great carrier and generates the cover through visual symbolism. The Evil Empire image is intended to fight the system and rebel against the establishment. The enhanced visual mocks authority as well.

I feel this graphic piece is intended to speak for a new alternative music culture and introduce a liberal language to a youth culture as well.

The image of the boy dressed in red, white, and blue was derived form Pop Art illustrator Mel Ramos, originally titled “Crime Buster.” The boy’s shirt was enhanced with an “e” in place of a “c” to further the message of the title “Evil Empire.” The title was then placed on the banner, which enhances and mocks the patriotic authority of the boy.

I value this project because not only is the image powerful, but its distinct identity reveals a political message through freedom of expression.
