Seymour Chwast, New York, New York, 1979

Description

The heroic figure is a staple in art and literature, and this issue looked at the highs and lows of heroism. James Thurber’s story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,’ a dream about becoming a hero, was the centerpiece. Smith’s slapstick cover revealed the lighter side of heroism while the serious profiles of real and imagined heroes, from Robin Hood to Malcolm X, suggested its solemn side.
