PEN Poster: “A Loss for Words”
Viva Dolan Communications and Design, Toronto, Ontario, 1995
Description
The Canadian branch of PEN, an international writers’ organization that campaigns for freedom of expression, requested a fundraising poster depicting the plight of writers who had been silenced for publishing their views. Blending illustration and photo-collage, “A Loss for Words” shows someone gagged with a spool of narrative piled up, unread, inside his head. The main illustration was drawn directly onto pages from a suppressed Solzhenitsyn novel.
