Project brief: To design a book jacket for Martha Grimes’ Fadeaway Girl.

Approach: The author requested the use of a Coles Phillips illustration. Phillips’ trademark “fadeaway girl” illustrations are incorporated into the novel’s plot.

Effectiveness: Mysterious.

Perfectly executed. Lonely type customized with the small inset key. The colorized illustration works well with the bright orange and cream. Clever how the spine acts as the doorway to the woman peeking through the keyhole.
