In designing a poster for the 1997 Immigrant Theater Festival at the Henry Street Settlement in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, I was looking for an image that would speak in a simple way about the positive aspects of immigration. I depicted the immigrant as a growing, grafted person, not an alien.
