Urban Disasters, October 1957, no. 9

Seymour Chwast, New York, New York, 1957

Description

H.L. Mencken wrote ironically about America’s visual blight in the cities and countryside as “the love of ugliness for its own sake, the lust to make the world tolerable.” In his center spread illustration, Chwast saw the ubiquitous newsstand—the museum in which so much popular art is hung—as representing good and bad blight.
