Glaser had done some drawings of the Porta Portense while living in Rome and thought one of them would be suitable in a travel section of the Graphic. He had also done a sort of gestural drawing derived from a combination of Japanese wash drawings and Picasso, which is demonstrated in the Bathers and Umbrellas illustration.
