The Courtezan Olympia, May 1962, no. 37
Seymour Chwast, Milton Glaser, New York, New York, 1962
Description
This issue (wrapped in plain brown paper on preceding page) was based on Edouard Manet’s notorious painting of a prostitute, Olympia. Glaser’s favorite page (opposite) derives in part form Henri Matisse, but it also represents another direction in drawing for him that builds on complexity and reduction. Davis (right), Chwast, and Seltzer did the other illustrations.
