Wicked: The Grimmerie
Headcase Design, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2005
Description
Our goal was to create the ultimate keepsake for fans of the Broadway show Wicked. The concept was to make it look like the ancient spell book of the main character, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West). To capture the whimsical yet dark tone of the play, we juxtaposed fanciful Ozian illustrations with occult design elements, and painstakingly aged each page of the book.
Juror Notes
A world is entered completely through the design—a difficult challenge given the existing and competing visuals associated with the original story of Oz, Maguire’s book and then the Broadway production. The design evokes all of these worlds and holds our interest through vast amounts of information.
