The Final Sleep/Le Dernier Sommeil

The Final Sleep/Le Dernier Sommeil

Hahn Smith Design, Toronto, Ontario, 2001

Description

We created this catalogue as a parallel experience to an installation by artist Spring Hurlbut at the Royal Ontario Museum.

We used a number of strategies to try to reflect the aura of the exhibition that was about the relationship between curating, collecting, museology, tradition, popular culture and physical space. Primarily we inverted the typical “architecture” of the book/catalogue. We opened with an engaging image section and placed the curatorial essays at the end of the book.

We used the traditional qualities of book design such as classical typography, uncoated paper and simple binding techniques. To capture the intensity of the curation and the artist’s obsession with organization, we also included a map and detailed listing of the many and diverse objects on display.
