Celebrating Modern Art: The Anderson Collection
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California, 2000
Description
The challenge with the cover was to find a way to graphically present an extensive art collection without relying on one specific iconographic work or artist. For the book interior, the challenge was to create a design that responded to the work of some 75 different artists in a way that allowed the artworks to stand out individually without conflicting with each other. My cover approach investigated the notion of creating a visual field of forms derived from a deconstructed analysis of the book’s subtitle. Since the focus of the collection is essentially modernist, I felt typography could be used to reference the parallel development of modernist typographic forms and composition. I also needed to create a design that was at once a bold and graphic statement and a modular and flexible system that could be used as a “brand” for other materials created in conjunction with the book.
