Hago de voz un cuerpo (Voices From the Body)
Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2007
Description
This wonderful picture book is all about the body: hands, hair, nails, arms and more. Fifteen outstanding Mexican poets have used their words to create an enchanting series of metaphors for the body.
This is a poetry book for children, mainly, but open to all readers. The first challenge was to find an interesting subject for children in which the 15 invited poets—many of whom had never written for children before—could easily develop appropriate verses and imagery. The second challenge was to look for an illustrator who could bring together the many poetic voices in one poetic graphic image without obvious or explicit imagery.
To help children approach the poetry, we decided to create a narrative by dividing each poem into stanzas or meaning units through several pages; readers can taste and sip each word slowly, take their time, feel the rhythm through poetic images, and make their own associations. This is why we chose a broadside format.
Juror Notes
The inventive imagery and beautiful coloration work hand in hand with funky display type. Well considered. Engaging and fun.
