Maps and Legends

McSweeney’s, San Francisco, California, 2008

Description

For Michael Chabon’s first essay collection, we wanted to emphasize the range of subjects he covered, as well as his affinity for genre fiction. The solution was three die-cut, overlapping jackets, drawn by Jordan Crane, which populated the cover with an ocean-jungle-desert spectrum of fantastical characters. Beneath them all, on a simple black book, the title (visible through the jacket die-cuts) is stamped inside a golden X—a punch line revealed only when all three jackets are removed.

Juror Notes

Seeing the book in person made me appreciate it so much more. Three separate overlapping dust jackets tell their own little stories as each is removed.
