Procession of the Dead

Procession of the Dead

Catherine Casalino Design, New York, New York, 2009

Description

Procession of the Dead is a dark book set in a Gotham-esque city. The idea for the cover came from a scene in the book in which there are ominous-looking shadow puppets.

I bought a set of small metal letters a while back, so I decided to spell out the title with their shadows. I attached the letters to thin wooden skewers and stuck them in florist’s foam. Then I placed them behind a sheet and lit everything from behind. Setting up the letters and making sure all the shadows were falling correctly so that the title was legible was really tedious! When I showed my creative director, Anne Twomey, what I had been working on for the cover, she told me she had an actual shadow puppet from Thailand! For the final, I ended up reshooting the cover with the puppet in place.

Juror Notes

This jacket makes beautiful use of the complete wraparound. The art and type blend together perfectly to create a unified whole.
