Index magazine (print and digital)

Harvard Art Museums Design Department, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2014

Description

Index magazine is published by Harvard Art Museums. Index presents a platform for discussions about visual culture and an exchange of ideas, which is at the heart of the Harvard Art Museums’ teaching and research mission. It also puts viewers behind the scenes at the museums and also provides regular updates during the final stages of the museums’ renovation and expansion project in Cambridge.

The digital magazine features new content posted each weekday and is supplemented by a tri-annual printed edition. It includes multimedia components that put viewers behind the scenes at the museums and also provides regular updates during the final stages of the museums’ renovation and expansion project in Cambridge. Readers can activate static content and stay connected to the digital edition of Index by using Layar, an augmented reality technology for mobile devices. New articles about various aspects of the collections, activity and history of the museums from staff, students and others are added nearly every day to the online magazine, including links to stories published by other institutions and media outlets.

Juror Notes

“The Index UI allows the user to quickly learn about a wide and changing variety of artifacts, ideas and events—and to dive immediately into any one item. Far from simply representing the collections, the project uses the web’s ability to aggregate databases to create a rich and personalized curatorial experience.” —Jeremy Mende
