The primary objective of this piece was to document and promote the first year activity of the “Design Writing” high school program. In the original design brief, it was strongly suggested that I avoid clichéd references to “typical” high school life that might trivialize the work of the students and teachers participating in the program. The images provided as base material for illustrations were very uneven in quality. The design of the book was pared down to a minimal grid structure and a simple hierarchy. A single serif typeface was used as a partial means of referencing traditional book forms and structures. Most of the illustrations and chapter dividers utilized portions of the essays, placing more or less equal emphasis on words and images. In addition, the use of text as part of the illustrations helped to mask the uneven quality of the source images.
