Sabiduras and Other Texts by Gego
HvADesign, Brooklyn, New York, 2005
Description
This book is a collection of multilingual texts, in Spanish, English and German, by the Venezuelan artist Gego (Gertrude Goldschmidt). The designers created a typographic translation of the artist’s original writings, using a specific color for each language. To accompany the curator’s introduction to each piece, a facsimile of the original writing was printed on a translucent stock (tipped in). The linen cover features a blind embossed reproduction of one of the artist’s prints and is supplemented with a bilingual belly band.
Juror Notes
This book uses its bilingual structure to graceful advantage. Black and gray inks allow parallel languages to flow seamlessly from page to page. The warm text stock and elegant typography make literature a tactile experience. The debossed case is understated (but fitting), but we found the bellyband the book’s only distraction.
