Rob Pollock, Automotive Woodgrain Specialist, Business Cards
So Design Co., Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2003
Description
Rob Pollock has worked in the auto body repair business for more than 40 years. In that time he has perfected the art of faux wood graining, used in the restoration of classic cars and hot rods. The technique is executed by hand (with a brush and paint) and applied to the car interior, metal dashboards, windowsills, doorknobs, and so on.
To fully appreciate this level of skill and craftsmanship, you have to see it. The problem presented to us was: how can we create a simple, effective communication tool that shows exactly what our client does to an audience of classic car enthusiasts and restoration specialists?
Our approach revolved around one objective—creating the ultimate business card. A card that showcases and communicates exactly the service being provided.
Each metal card is personally woodgrained, by hand, by Rob. The cards function as a sample swatch, with various colors and wood finishes applied to different cards. This flexibility enables Rob to choose a particular color or technique he feels appropriate, tailoring each package to the individual before sending out the cards. Stickers are letterpress printed, hand assembled and packaged in a proprietary envelope, reinforcing the truly unique quality of this boutique craft.
The total production budget was under $1,000. Since the launch of the new business card system, business has doubled.
