This book has been supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and the John Wesley and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation. It was assembled from material loaned by Berea College, Kentucky, the Doris Ulmann Foundation, and John Jacob Niles.
