Peter Halley: Maintain Speed
COMA (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Brooklyn, New York, 1999
Description
This project demanded that we organize vast quantities of material. The subject of this book, Peter Halley, is an artist, writer, publisher and lecturer. To grasp the multiplicity of his production, we began with 1,600 images and edited down to 550 images which we then assembled into multiple, but related, stories. In tackling this process of editing and narration, breaking down and rebuilding, we took our cue from Halley, whose own raw materials consist of conduits, cells and links. We provided a kind of compass in the form of an information bar that runs along the bottom of each page and facilitates linkage within and outside of the book and sparks interpretation by presenting views of Halley's paintings in different contexts, quotations, documentation of events and details about the plates.
