That Way to the Left

Miriam Brack, Boezen, Switzerland, 2017

Description

Arrows are popular due to their fast, almost universal legibility and are being used in many shapes and function. Their visual variety makes it hard to compare their meaning and design, which are rarely in relation to their function or application. This leads to a steadily growing indistinctness of the sign—For how much longer will we be able to read arrows precisely?

Due to the wide acceptance and common understanding of arrows, their basic shape is rarely explored or taken under evaluation to fit the specific field of use. That Way to the Left is a systematic study of the appearance and semantics of arrows that allows direct comparison and explores new possible shapes. Which are the semantic meanings of this tool, that once served as a weapon, but nowadays guides us and imparts a sense of security? In the context of an unsure future of the sign, That Way to the Left is basis and tool for the use of a future arrow.
