Falling Man

Falling Man

Simon & Schuster, New York, New York, 2007

Description

How does one deal with the first literary novel about the defining moment of 21st-century America? I don’t know what I would have done without the amazing photo taken by Katie Weisberger. The photo said heaven, earth and more. It gave the reader a clear blue sky to enter into this world to eventually find the Twin Towers on the back jacket, peaking into the clouds in an almost magical way. The typography was set to harmonize with the sky and “a novel” was placed to illustrate falling into the clouds—a reference to the title of the book, which comes from the electrifying photograph of the man who jumped or fell from the North Tower.

Juror Notes

NASA (or is it financier?) typography and an image/text haiku: everything counts on this cover.
