Happy
Scribner, New York, New York, 2009
Description
Alex Lemon’s vivid memoir tells the story of a star college athlete nicknamed Happy. In his freshman year, he suffers a hemorrhagic stroke—a brain bleed. Without being too overt, I chose to slice the title in half to represent the bleed. The title is actually printed on the case and the half jacket can be removed to reveal the Happy underneath.
Juror Notes
This jacket nods at cliches without actually utilizing them: the smiley-face yellow without the smiley face; the dripping blood that is pink and not blood. The two (seemingly) contradictory sides of the jacket have more in common than one might see at a casual glance.
