Floodgate “Penalty”
Smay Vision, Inc., New York, New York, 1996
Description
Floodgate is your typical dark, southern, Black Sabbath, swamp music/heavy metal band with a passion for sharks. After countless cover ideas involving natural disasters, we settled on the grisly image of the open chest/shark mouth. This, combined with one of our original typefaces (Chunkstyle) captured the heaviness of the band in a way that finally made everyone happy.
As a finished piece, “Penalty” feels like it was dredged up from the bottom of a swamp, which not only conveys the band’s musical style but the process by which we arrived at the final cover and packaging.
